Stories by Ndenyal

About me: I've been writing all my life—but until some years ago, it's been all nonfiction. I've written several textbooks and instructional workbooks and other teaching materials, and articles and essays about history, linguistics, religion, literature reviews, and other nonfiction. However, in all those years I had never tried writing fiction. Then when I was researching some topics in psychology for an article I was writing, I stumbled across a fiction story where the author employed the very psychological issues I planned to write about. The story I came across happened to occupy a sub-genre in erotic literature; it was part of the "Naked in School" universe, and after I read several of them, I found them to be so disturbing that I couldn't stop thinking about them. Those stories reminded me of my high school days when boys were required to be naked in their P.E. swimming classes—truly being "naked in school"—and my high school's swimming program was mandatory. I was an incredibly modest kid and had absolutely no intention of swimming naked, so I had to find a way to avoid being put in a P.E. class with swimming. I know if I had been forced to be in one of those classes, it would have been a traumatic experience for me. My parents were aware of how I felt, but their attempt to get me an exemption fell on unresponsive ears. My folks knew about my excessive modesty and knew that it bordered on the pathologic. Eventually that level of modesty became to be recognized as a social phobia.

Knowing that straightforward methods of getting out of those required classes wouldn't work, I had to come up with an underhanded way of doing it and I wasn't afraid of breaking the rules. I was determined to find a way to avoid swimming classes and I could be very sneaky. Prior to high school, I did some things in elementary school that, as an adult, make me wonder what the teachers were thinking when something weird happened in their classroom. To tell the truth, I got away with a lot of mischief. So, entering high school, I was emboldened to take audacious risks to avoid swimming. When I started high school, ... I learned that the school used student helpers to assist the teachers who were assigned to make up the students' class scheduling—this was way before computers. It was an after-school activity so kids weren't very interested in volunteering for it. So I was able to get myself assigned as a student helper. And as a helper, it was easy to find my own program card and approve my class schedule, bypassing the teachers' final-approval. How? The teachers had a set of rubber stamps which had special designs which they used to stamp the program cards. They kept these stamps under very tight control. The teachers who ran these scheduling sessions checked every student's program card to be sure that the required courses were being taken and then used a special final-approval rubber stamp to validate the term's schedule.

I had learned about how the school's class scheduling was done, and about those stamps, as soon as I started high school and that's why I wanted to be an assistant—I knew I could forge those stamps if I got a sample. I was able to get impressions of the stamps' design by swiping a completed and approved card. I traced the stamps' designs and slipped the card back into the approved stack. Then I simply made duplicates of the rubber stamps; having access to rubber-stamp-making materials at my dad's business let me do this. With my own approval stamps, I made and approved my own class schedule for every single term in school, and in the process, I was also able to assign myself to the classes I wanted, and never to a P.E. class with swimming. (I said I was sneaky, right?) So my goal of skipping all swimming classes for all four years was realized.

The memories of how I felt about the idea that one could be forced to be publically naked as a vulnerable teenager in school stuck with me long after I became an adult. Even though our local schools, and then schools around the country, abolished the practice of naked swimming (by the mid-1970s), it annoyed me that schools could so cavalierly ignore kids' personal modesty. True, the YMCA organization had a tradition of naked swimming, but that was totally voluntary. I wasn't alone in my sense of the indignity of naked swimming. Once during my military service, this issue came up in a discussion of school experiences, and I learned that other guys felt that way too and heard from them that in some schools, female instructors sometimes taught boys' swimming classes where the boys were naked. Worse, not all high-school pools were shielded from view of passers by, either. I heard from aome guys that in their school, the naked boys were visible to anyone looking through the pool's windows or, in some cases, gallery seating, balconies, or mezzanines overlooked the pool and were open to anyone. Did you know that a small number of school districts and regional athletic conferences held public swimming meets where the boys' team members were required to swim naked? I heard of a couple of schools which required girls to swim naked too but those instances appear to be very rare (I've never heard of any co-ed naked swimming classes—in the U.S., at least, except in those swimming meets where the boys were naked and the girls wore suits). Thirty years later, by 2000, most people refused to believe that mandatory naked swiming was common up to the mid 1970s—it's an urban legend, they claim. No, it's a fact.

Around 2002, Karen Wagner wrote the first "Naked in School" (NiS) story and created the genre. I didn't encounter these stories until perhaps a decade later; when I did, my latent anger about my own school experience and how I thwarted school officials, coalesced into a feeling of denial that any school today could ever create such a program, and this anger led me to think of how I would overcome the NiS Program if it were real and I were to be selected for it.

This feeling of denial prompted me to try my hand at writing a story in the NiS universe. In my story, I wanted to show just how bad and how wrong it was to treat kids in the way that most stories treated them. No matter that the stories were fiction, fantasies actually. So I used my experiences as a kid to shape a story plot where I could get the hero to avoid having to participate, using his physical and mental skills to defeat the system. My first character, Kevin, is fairly autobiographical, actually; as a kid I had most of Kevin's skills, especially the one of his use of persuasion to get his way. I could virtually always get adults to see things from my point of view and loved to trap them in a logical impasse when their reasoning was faulty. Doing this to my teachers earned me much emnity from them and many trips to the principal's office. And many lectures from my parents.

So, although I had an idea where my first story should go, I was quite fascinated at how it took on a life of its own as I was writing it—very much like life itself—and the characters took my writing over, making their story go in totally unexpected directions. Initially I was writing for my own entertainment, but as "Kevin and Denise" drew to a close, I thought I would share it with others who appreciate this form of literature.

When I began writing "Kevin and Denise," I was responding negatively to the idea that a world could exist where kids could be forced to be naked while attending school, just as I responded to the idea that I would have to take part in a naked swimming class. These "Naked in School" stories—more than 200 of them have been written—are set in such a universe, one which could exist only if the government was able to adopt laws which ignored moral norms and interfered with people's rights and their personal lives. Of course, that sounds just like our current government, right? The only difference between our government and the one in the "Naked in School" universe is the premise that in the NiS stories, educational psychologists have decided that the maturing of teenagers would be improved if the teens were forced to surrender their modesty and be made to submit to sexual exploitation by their peers. These psychological "experts" then had convinced lawmakers to adopt laws which required all high school students to spend a week or more going to school completely naked, with a small number of selected students chosen to participate each week while the rest of the students remained clothed. This is the underlying premise of the NiS story genre and most stories start using that scenario. How each author handles the telling of their story provides immense variety in plot, tone, and approach.

My own interpretation of the idea behind the NiS universe is one of denial—the source of my pen name: I'm "In Denial." Not only do I want to deny that such a universe is possible, I also want to challenge the very notion that a society could require kids to be naked in school. While I was writing, I soon realized that the premise of the NiS universe could be viewed as a metaphor for government overreach into private lives.

Much positive feedback for the first story soon encouraged me to write a second story, then Denise shanghaied me and made me write about her further exploits. And since I still had a few ideas knocking around the wet matter between my ears, I subsequently did a fourth story, one going heavily into psychological ideas.

In my fifth story, "Emma," I explore a different kind of "what if?": The Program is "supposed" to be mandatory in all public high schools, right? What if the school is located somewhere where the climate isn't conducive to nudity? What then? Read this story and see.

And in my sixth story, "The Vodou Physicist," I have my main character come to the U.S. from a completely different culture where she's learned certain mental skills based on her family's religion. When she learns that forced nudity is happening, she decides to do something about that. This story is more about her coming of age than it is about "Naked in School," however, and I hope that readers will find it entertaining.

You should read the stories in order; spoilers to earler stories abound in later ones. I hope readers will enjoy these really different interpretations of the "Naked in School" universe. I'd love to get your feedback about them. My contact info is at the bottom of the page.

[Almost all of the "Naked in School" stories refer to a "Program Booklet" which, in the stories, the school provides as a student guide for pupils required to be Program participants. Back around 2006, some enterprising NiS authors collaborated on writing a "booklet" which contained a composite of the various rules from the many stories which had been written up to that date. Although there is no actual story plot "canon" in the NiS universe, this booklet has become a general guide for most NiS story authors who wrote their works subsequent to 2006. For those readers interested in the contents of this generic booklet, an archive copy can be found here: NiS Program Pamphlet]
